Nostalgic Novels: Anjali and Sophie share their favourite childhood stories

Welcome back to episode 37 of the Rants and Reviews podcast. Today we're talking about all our childhood favourites: the books we read as kids and fondly 'awwed' at whenever we talk about them.

Currently Reading

Each episode of Rants and Reviews we share what we’re currently reading, so you can discover our favourite genes, add some books to your TBR pile, and hear us rave and rage about characters, plot, setting and more.
Anjali is currently reading:
  • Thorn by Intisar Khanani
Sophie is currently reading:
  • The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins

Main feature

(08:30) Sophie kicks us off in the episode and shares with us one of her favourite authors: Jacquline Wilson. We also discover that this prolific children's author has written 103 books in her life so far. 103!! So many! Anjali also chimes in and lets us know which of Wilson's books she read as a kid, although there are way less than she actually she thought she'd read.

(18:10) Anjali's first choice is one that she read at intermediate school (about age 12), and the teacher read it the class at the end of the day: Holes by Louis Sachar. She absolutely loved it and also thinks they did a good job at the Shia LaBeouf movie in 2003. We mentioned it in our Movie Musings episode.

"It's the onions!!

(21:00) The second one that Sophie brings it up is one that Anjali has never heard of before. But it's one of the only book series that Sophie remembers getting out of the library as a kid. There was a lot of begging her mother to go back to the library to get the latest story. Sophie show's a picture to Anjali, which listeners can't see, so you can check out the Goodreads listing here.

(23:30) Continuing with the series theme, Anjali shares one of her favourite (to this day) series, and that is A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket. We also talk about this series in relation to its TV and movie counterpart, which you can listen to in Movie Musings

(26:40) We learn something new in Sophie's next pick and it seriously blows out mind. Tune in to find out what it is!

(31:00) Anjali's final pick is the Narnia Series by CS Lewis, which we have talked about it before. The copies she has are as old as she is.

(32:00) We actually spend the next 10-minutes or so talking about all the books that we forgot about, so our Shout Out list gets pretty long pretty fast.
