Worldly Words: We travel around the world through books

Welcome to episode 36! In this episode we’re travelling around the world! Well, via the books we’ve read. Seeing as international travel is limited at the moment we thought it was a good opportunity to take a trip to some of the cities and countries that are the settings to books we’ve read over the years. Have a listen to find out which places we’d love to visit!

Currently Reading

Each episode of Rants and Reviews we share what we’re currently reading, so you can discover our favourite genes, add some books to your TBR pile, and hear us rave and rage about characters, plot, setting and more.

Sophie is currently reading:
  • Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor
  • About to start The Switch by Beth O’Leary
Anjali is currently reading:
  • Just finished reading P.S I Still Love You by Jenny Han (you can check out our full episode on the first this series, To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before)
  • Just picked up Always and Forever, Lara Jean by Jenny Han

Main feature

(06:30) Launching into the episode, Anjali explains a little about what we’re going to be talking about. Seeing as we’re in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, international travel is non-existent, so we thought it was the perfect time to talk about all the places in books that we would love it to. Sophie kicks us off with her first of four countries/cities that she’d love to visit. We also talk about Christmas for a few minutes …

(12:30) Anjali’s first book is a country in East Europe: Romania, from the book Hunting Prince Dracula by Kerri Mansicalco. She also talks about a stunning library in Bucharest, which is called in English) The Carousel Of Light. Check out the link to see it; it’s beautiful!

(15:30) Sophie takes us to Italy in her next choice, thanks to all of Nikki Pelegrino’s books, in particular, A Year at Hotel Gondola.

(17:20) The next on our list is one that may be on Anjali’s To Be Visited list due to a certain animated movie from 1997 … cough Anastasia cough. Here’s the puzzle replica of St Basil’s she mentions in the podcast.

(19:15) We break out in song with Sophie’s next choice. We actually have a double up, as we both picked a book which is based in New York City.

(27:20) “I’m kind of cheating,” says Sophie. Technically it’s not cheating, buuuuut she may be pushing it.

(31:40) Anjali’s final choice is from a series that she read as a child and loved. It’s also a country which she regrets not going to when she lived in England … Turns out Sophie never went there either, despite the fact she lived in England for 13 years. That country is The Republic of Ireland and/or Northern Ireland.

(34:18) Sophie wraps up the episode for us with a list of shout-outs, which Anjali didn’t prepare … sorry.
