Movie Musings: Talking movie adaptations
Welcome to our second to last episode of season, and today we’re going to the movies. We’re talking all about the books that were better than the movie, the shocking movies that were better than books, and the books we’d love to be turned into movies.

There’s a rather long discussion about Christmas and how people, at the time of this recording (November 10th), had already put up Christmas trees. That’s ridiculous.
We also have a quick chat about the Blogger’s Bookshelf Book Club pick for December, which was chosen by Sophie. My True Love Gave To Me, by a various collection of authors, is a Christmassy short story compilation. Head to BB to join us as we read it!
Main feature
(08.30) We start off our episode (finally), by chatting about some of the movie adaptations that we thought were really good, or portrayed the book well. There’s also a mention of a TV series adaptation in this discussion.
(13:30) There are many movie adaptations that we don’t like, and while we know that most of the time the books are a lot better, we always have hopes that the movie will do a great job. However, most of the time the movies are ‘loosely based on’, loosely being the operative word, and don’t make the cut.
(15.40) Dumbo makes an appearance. Not literally.
(16:15) What ever happened to the last Divergent movie!? We have a quick Google as we record to discover what happened to the lost movie.
(17:58) Despite Sophie’s love of a particular book series, she didn’t like the movie much at all. Tune in to find out which ones! Anjali also shares her choice of movies she didn’t like for books she did.
(22.01) Anjali brings up the John Marsden series, Tomorrow, When the War Began, and enjoyed the books, but not really the movie because they managed to schmosh multiple books into the film. ‘Schmoshed’ is a word that occurs multiple times in this chat.
(22.22) Any TV shows or movies that we enjoyed more than the books? Game of Thrones is mentioned (tune in to find out which one of us is slowly getting through the books).
(27:13) Sophie raves about The Devil Wears Prada movie, but is a bit meh about the book, and find out which Neil Gaiman book Anjali didn’t like, but loved the movie.
(30.35) Next we talk about books we’ve read but haven’t seen the movie adaptations of yet. Sophie mentions The Darkest Minds, while Anjali brings up Ready Player One, and Anne of Green Gables on Netflix.
(32.48) There’s a whole discussion about John Green’s books, Paper Towns and Looking for Alaska and whether the movies are out yet. It’s a confusing time in these few minutes.
(34.30) There are many books that have been turned into movies that Anjali has wanted to watch, but she wanted to read the book first. But she still hasn’t done either.
(36:36) Like all good podcasts on books, we talk about musicals. Because, duh, right?
(37:15) Upcoming movies! We chat about The Hate U Give movie, which has already been released in the UK but we don’t get here in New Zealand until January. Mary Poppins is coming out soon, and we squee over The Crimes of Grindelwald that came out in November.
