Riddikulus Reread Part 1: Sophie and Anjali reread Harry Potter

Welcome back, dear listeners! Today we’re looking back at one of our favourite books from childhood: Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. Yes, that’s right; we did read it again! Stay tuned to hear what we thought.

Currently reading

No Currently Reading for this episode. Instead we just dive straight into Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone by JK Rowling.

Main feature

(00:21) (Excuse the cat’s meows in the background.) After discussing the synopsis on the back on the 2001 Bloomsbury Paperback edition, but after that’s done, we start at the very beginning: ‘Mr and Mrs Dursely of Number 4 Privet Drive were proud to say that they were perfectly normal, thank you very much.” When the first line in the first book of a long series starts like that, you remember in your reread how much you love it. We kick off the episode but chatting about the first chapter, and all its highs and lows. Anjali had basically forgotten the whole first chapter.

(10:00) Anjali and Sophie both stumble over their words while Sophie shares a word that’s repeated in Chapter One which she really doesn’t like.

(15:45) Anjali wonders if she needs to go into the drill business.

(26:30) Find out what Sophie would give to have an hour in Diagon Alley. It’s pretty extreme. We spend a few moments talking about the wonders of Diagon Alley and which shops we would love to visit. (“Just show me someone lugging a cauldron and I'll be happy.”)

(37:30) Finally we’re on the train to Hogwarts! And we can’t talk about this chapter without talking about the Trolley Witch and that wondrous flavours of the Bertie Bott’s Every Flavour Beans (“they mean every flavour!”). Anjali has many questions about Ron’s chocolate frog card stash.

(44:55) “Thanks Pottermore! You know me better than I know myself!”

(45:45) Anjali brings us a conspiracy theory. It’s big, you guys. Get ready.

(50:00) We question the students and their commons rooms and whether Malfoy and Crabbe share a bunk bed.  If you take anything away with you from this, the first part of our two-part episode on our Philosopher's Stone reread it’s this: we have questions. So very many questions.

Outro

Have you reread Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone recently? Did you have as many questions as we did? Stay tuned for Part 2 later on in this season, where we continue flicking our way through the book ad bringing up all kinds of queries.
