Captivating Covers: Books with beautiful covers

Welcome back to Rants and Reviews. In Captivating Covers we’re talking about some of our favourite book covers. We realise this is audio only, but we’ll be doing our best to describe the covers in detail. We’ll be sharing some of these on Instagram and Twitter so you can see the covers we’re trying to describe.

Currently Reading

Each episode of Rants and Reviews we share what we’re currently reading, so you can discover our favourite genes, add some books to your TBR pile, and hear us rave and rage about characters, plot, setting and more.

  Anjali is currently reading:
  • The Toll by Neal Shusterman
  • Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone by J.K. Rowling (audio version)
Sophie is currently reading:
  • The Sisters of Auschwitz by Roxane van Iperen
Before we get into the main episode, Anjali shares about her trip to the Barfoot and Thompson 24 Hour Book Sale which happens in November in Auckland. She lets us know about some of the books she got, and the fact that she had to get rid of a chair in her room to accommodate a book trolley for all these new books. Oops.

Main feature

(8:50) We get into the main episode! All these book that we’re about to talk about we’ve listed below in the ‘Books mentioned in this episode’ so you can find the books and see what we’re talking about.  Anjali kicks us off by trying to explain the covers of both Strange the Dreamer, and Muse of Nighmares by Laini Taylor. Foil wins the day.

(11:30) Speaking of foiling, Sophie’s first choice is a screenplay with a stunning cover. If you can guess what it is without listening to it, you get a prize. Okay, you don’t. But feel good about yourself for guessing correctly!

‘Imagine being a graphic designer for Harry Potter’ - Sophie

(14:50) Sometimes you love a cover of a book but you don’t have that edition. Such is the case with the Shades of Magic series by V.E. Schwab. Both Anjali and Sophie have the Titan versions of the book, but the Tor editions are the ones which have the beautiful covers that we love so much. Check out this article from 2014, with some of the cover choosing process for these books; the very first image is the ones we love.

(16:15) Classics can be a hit or miss when it comes to reading them, we find. But there are some classics which have the most stunning covers. Sophie particularly likes the Penguin Clothbound Editions.
‘I store it up there next to my dragon’ - Anjali
(21:35) Another duology is up for Anjali’s next pick. And it’s one that she’s re-read this year as part of our Vow to Re-Read list.

(29:02) The Vintage Springtime Club by Beatrice Meier is Sophie’s next pick and it’s the beautiful lettering that really draws your eye to the cover.

(30:40) Anjali chats about a beautiful series which has ombre spines as the books go on.

(33:20) Last year Sophie’s Blogger’s Bookshelf book club pick was Meet Cute by various authors and Sophie really likes the cover of this. It also has this great great texture happening. Please ignore Anjali’s plate noises in this part; she’s eating dinner.

(38:45) Anjali’s final book of the episode is Romanov by Nadine Branders, and it’s a really simply black, red, gold, and white. And it’s beautiful.  We end the episode by a quick list of shout outs.
