Blogger’s Bookshelf: Guests Erin and Ria Chat About Book Blogging
Hello book lovers! On this episode of Rants and Reviews Sophie and I continue our chat with our friends Erin and Ria from England. This time we're discussing the collaborative book blog that they created and run together, Blogger’s Bookshelf. (00:24) To kick things off, Sophie asks about Blogger’s Bookshelf and how it all began. Erin and Ria give us the short versions of how it came into being back in 2012.(02:09) Anjali chimes in that she received an email shortly after BB got going about becoming a guest poster, which then turned into a regular reviewing slot. Sophie joined the team this year (2018).
(03:10) Ria and Erin hadn’t met when they started Blogger’s Bookshelf, but only met about a year later, much like Anjali and Sophie, who also haven’t met in person yet.
(04:15) We have a short chat about how Blogger’s Bookshelf has ended up being a team from literally the other side of the world, with Sophie and Anjali being in New Zealand and the rest of the BB team in the UK. This conversation ends in Anjali saying we should all meet in Oregon (because she’s going there next year) and if not then she’ll just wave across the ocean, via the rest of the States.
(06:08) Sophie asks a couple of questions: Do you feel you read less or more now that you publish reviews? Or do you read more or less of a certain category because you know what your readers will like?
(08:00) Ria brings up that at the beginning of BB, dystopian genre was at the height of its popularity, and we have a little chat about the similarity between them and how there was a huge influx of it.
(10:28) There’s a discussion about having only parts of series, for example only owning book two in a series even if you haven’t read it yet.
(11:46) Sophie asks our guests: Do you feel you’re more likely to read a book post if you’ve read the book already? We tend to read book reviews and posts of books that we’ve already read rather than books we haven’t, so we can see what other people thought about it, and disagree with their star ratings.
(13:30) Goodreads is a fantastic way to not only find new books, catalogue ones you’ve already read and see what your friends are reading, but also a place to write reviews. (14:30) Anjali has a brag about her epic excel Google Docs for keeping her book reviews organised for publishing companies.

(16:24) The next question we ask our guests is if they’re more likely to be asked for recommendations from friends and family and internet friends because you write reviews?
(19:30) The book blogging community is a lot of fun to be a part of. We ask Ria and Erin if there are any book blogs that they particularly enjoy. Ria has a couple of book blogs that she goes to, but also watches a lot of YouTube channels. Also, Instagram is a great place to find books.

(22:50) Anjali hated nearly all of the books they had to read in high school, and asks about whether there were any books that they read in high school that they actually enjoyed. The Hobbit was one of Anjali’s high school books, and it was ultimate book and she got top marks for her assignments because she loved it and had already read it.
Shakespeare features in this episode! We have a quick chat about the bard’s plays and what we had to study at school.
(26:46) Sophie stole books from school (by accident? No one knows), and Ria did also. It’s a trend?
